By August 22, 2021August 24th, 2021Muffler

Just like you, I was also trying to find out the top mufflers a few weeks ago. After comparing different mufflers, I came up with this article.

So, consider yourself lucky!

In this article, I will be talking about the top mufflers starting from the loudest one to the quietest one. It will help you in choosing the right one for you.

For each muffler, I will talk about the type, sound, costs and discuss whether or not they are legal.

Though, the majority of them are chambered mufflers because they are legal and can go quite loud. And if you didn’t know, the majority of stock mufflers in cars are also chambered mufflers.

1. Flowmaster Outlaw

Flowmaster Outlaw is the loudest muffler in the list. It’s a straight-through muffler – which means it was designed with performance in mind and not sound suppression. Making it extremely loud.

Flowmaster outlaw should only be used for racing or off-road applications. Here’s a summary table for the Flowmaster Outlaw:

Flowmaster Outlaw
Type Straight-through Muffler
Sound Gain Extremely Loud

Cost $100
Installation $70-$100

Flowmsater Outlaw

Flowmsater Outlaw

Flowmaster Outlaw: Muffler Type

The Flowmaster Outlaw is a straight-through muffler. It uses a hollow pipe – allowing exhaust gases and sound waves to flow out easily to improve performance.

The outlaw muffler uses fiberglass packing to absorb sound waves as it passes through. Not the best for sound suppression but definitely the best for performance and horsepower.

Flowmaster Outlaw: Sound Gain

The Flowmaster Outlaw is extremely loud and the sound can be easily heard from inside the car. Do not expect to have any conversation in the car with the Flowmaster Outlaw muffler.

The outlaw muffler is very close to muffler delete or straight piping. It’s extremely loud and deafening.

You shouldn’t install the Outlaw for street use or daily drivers. This muffler will cause a huge disturbance to your neighborhood.

Flowmaster Outlaw: Cost

The Flowmaster Outlaw costs about $100. You can get it online from Amazon here or your local muffler shop.

Although I doubt your local muffler shop has the Flowmaster Outlaw in stock – because it’s meant to be used for racing cars!

Flowmaster Outlaw: Legal?

The Flowmaster Outlaw is not legal. The sound is too loud and is definitely about the legal limit of 95 dB.

If you are looking to install a loud muffler on your daily driver, then the Outlaw is not the one. Look into the Super 44 or Super 40 instead. I cover both of them below.

2. Flowmaster Super 10

Flowmaster Super 10 is the second loudest muffler. It’s a chambered muffler designed for minimal sound suppression with the least amount of components.

Which means the Flowmaster Super 10 is less restrictive and does not have much sound suppression at all – resulting in loud sound both during idle and acceleration.

Here’s a summary table for the Flowmaster Super 10. I will talk about each of them in detail below.

Flowmaster Super 10
Type Chambered Muffler
Sound Gain Extremely Loud
Application Racing
Cost $65-$80
Installation $70-$100
Is It Legal? No
Flowmaster Super 10

Flowmaster Super 10

Flowmaster Super 10: Muffler Type

Flowmaster Super 10 is a chambered muffler –  which means it uses steel plates to form chambers and cause sound waves to bounce into each other and cancel out.

The super 10 only have 1 chamber and not many steel plates – which means the sound suppression is minimal.

This is suitable for off-road or racing usage where the engine sound is lower priority (or where there is no such limitation at all).

Flowmaster Super 10: Sound Gain

The Flowmaster Super 10 muffler is extremely loud both during idle and acceleration. It’s so loud that it can be deafening even from inside the car.

Here’s a YouTube video showing the sound of Flowmaster Super 10.

If you are thinking of installing a new muffler on your daily driver – where you go to work or where you ride with your family or girlfriend, I suggest you don’t.

Flowmaster Super 10 is extremely loud. Personally, it’s too loud for me. It may sound cool and aggressive in the first week. After that it becomes annoying and deafening!

Well, that’s for the common people. Are you one of the commoners?

Flowmaster Super 10: Cost

The Flowmaster Super 10 muffler will cost you around $65-$80.

You can buy it either from a physical store or online from Amazon here. If you are buying online, make sure you get the muffler that’s fit for your exact car model and year.

Buying a muffler that does not fit might require you to do some cutting, welding and additional exhaust clamps. I would avoid this if I were you!

Flowmaster Super 10: Installation

A mechanic would charge around $70-$100 to install the Flowmaster Super 10 muffler in your car.

I personally think that the installation price is steep. If you think so too, you might want to try installing it yourself.

I am sure there are plenty of tutorials on YouTube. You might even get an official Flowmaster video. These guys are quite active with posting content on YouTube, so that’s great!

Flowmaster Super 10: Legal?

The Flowmaster Super 10 muffler is not legal. It’s too loud and is definitely above the legal dB limit. The Super 10 is suitable for off-road or tracking use only.

Flowmaster Super 10 is considered to be a race muffler. Therefore, it is not street legal. It’s meant to be used only on track or off-roading purposes.

Different areas or states usually have their own laws on vehicle noise. But the Flowmaster Super 10, I say don’t bother checking.

It’s loud and deafening and is definitely not legal for street use (let alone daily drivers).

3. Flowmaster Super 44

Flowmaster Super 44 is the third loudest muffler. I personally recommend this one if you want a loud muffler for your daily driver and don’t mind hearing the sound from inside your car.

Here’s a summary table of the Super 44:

Flowmaster Super 44
Type Chambered Muffler
Sound Gain Deep, aggressive sound exhaust note that’s loud
Application Street
Cost $80-$90
Installation $70-$100
Is It Legal? Partially
Flowmasater super 44

Flowmasater super 44

Flowmaster Super 44: Muffler Type

Flowmaster Super 44 is a chambered muffler.

Chambered muffler uses steel plates internally to create chambers that bounce sound waves against each other to cancel out.

Aftermarket chambered mufflers are designed with a louder sound in mind (not necessarily performance).

Most mufflers in daily street cars are chambered mufflers. Even stock mufflers that come equipped with new cars are chambered mufflers.

Flowmaster Super 44: Sound Gain

The Flowmaster Super 44 produces a deep and aggressive exhaust note. It’s much louder than stock mufflers and can still be heard from inside the car.

The Super 44 is suitable for enthusiasts who love the loud sound and want to install it on their daily drivers.

Beware that you can still hear sound from inside your car – that’s how loud the Super 44 is. For some enthusiasts (including me), this is quite annoying after some time.

Which is why I don’t personally get the Super 44 but the Super 40 instead. I will talk more about Super 40 down below.

Here’s a YouTube video that will show you how loud the Flowmaster Super 44 muffler is:

Flowmaster Super 44: Cost

The Flowmaster Super 44 will cost you around $80 – $90

You can order it online from Amazon here or from car workshops – they should have it because the Flowmaster Super 44 is quite popular.

Though, you should try to buy from any authorized dealer to avoid being overcharged. A super 44 should not cost more than $100.

Flowmaster Super 44: Installation

It will cost around $70-$100 to get your muffler installed at any workshop.

I’ve already explained the installation procedure above in the article. Please refer to that in case you are interested in installing on your own to save money.

However, I would advise you to ask any mechanic to install it for you.

Flowmaster Super 44: Legal?

Flowmaster Super 44 is street legal in many states in the US. However, it’s not legal for strict states like California. I urge you to check with the seller regarding your local laws.

Check with the seller especially when it comes to sound. California, being the strictest state in the US – only allows vehicles to produce sound up to 95 dB.

Emission wise, the Super 44 is compliant. Sound wise, it may differ from 1 car to another (due to engine size). Which is why, I urge you to confirm with the seller for your local driving.

4. Flowmaster Super 40

Flowmaster Super 40 is a loud muffler that’s suitable for daily drivers. The sound bleeding to the cabin is minimal and it’s legal when it comes to sound and emission limits.

Here’s the summary table for Flowmaster Super 40

Flowmaster Super 40
Type Chambered Muffler
Sound Gain Deep, aggressive sound that’s not too loud
Application Street
Cost $100 – $140
Installation $70-$100
Is It Legal? Yes
Flowmaster Super 40

Flowmaster Super 40

Flowmaster Super 40: Muffler Type

Flowmaster Super 40 is also a chambered muffler like the Super 44 / Super 10 muffler. However, there are more chambers and steel plates – causing more sound suppression and quieter engines.

Chambered mufflers are not designed with horsepower / performance in mind – so don’t expect any power gain at all. Just sound improvement.

Flowmaster Super 40: Sound Gain

A Flowmaster Super 40 produces a deep and aggressive sound. It’s definitely louder than stock but it’s not extremely loud. You can easily have conversations from inside the car.

It produces a similar but deeper and quieter sound than the Super 44 muffler.

I personally use the Super 40 muffler because despite being louder and aggressive, I can still drive it as my daily driver and have non enthusiasts in my car without issues.

Here’s a YouTube video that will show you how loud the Flowmaster Super 40 is:

Flowmsater Super 40: Cost

The cost of a Flowmaster Super 40 is around $100 – $140.

Similarly, you can get it online from Amazon here or get it from a local muffler shop. However, make sure you get it from an authorized dealer to avoid overcharging.

A super 40 is more expensive because it contains more components inside the muffler to provide the extra sound suppression.

Flowmaster Super 40: Installation

A car mechanic will charge you around $70-$100 to install the Flowmaster Super 40 in your car.

To save money, you can also install it yourself. It’s a great opportunity to learn and get your hands dirty.

You can find many tutorials on YouTube on installing aftermarket mufflers. Make sure you get the muffler specifically for your car model and year to avoid headaches.

Flowmaster Super 40: Legal?

Yes, the Flowmaster Super 40 is street legal. It’s still within the legal sound limit of 95 dB and it does not impact car emission.

That being said, you should still check with your local laws and the seller. Some cars have big engines that are louder. This might produce an even louder sound with the Super 40.

5. Hooker Aero Chamber Muffler

Hooker Aero muffler is a loud muffler but relatively quiet when compared in this list. Below is the summary table for the Hooker Aero Muffler:

The Hooker Aero Chamber Muffler makes your car sound deep and throaty, without changing over time.

The Hooker Aero Chamber is aerodynamically designed and has shown to be 23% more efficient (More horsepower and torque) than the most popular high-performance brand.

Here’s a YouTube video that will show you how loud it is:

Hooker Aero: Cost

The Hooker Aero Chamber Muffler will cost you around $96.

You can easily buy it from Amazon here and get it shipped at your doorstep. Though it may be a bit hard to find them on physical stores.

The Hooker Aero is not as popular as the Flowmaster mufflers.

Also worth mentioning that the Hooker Aero may cause rattling noises after some time because of loose components. I have seen a few persons with this issue.

Hooker Aero: Installation

It will cost you around $70-$100 to get the Hooker Aero Chamber Muffler installed in your car.

It is recommended to get it installed by a mechanic instead of trying to install on your own. It might be an expensive option, but it can be worth it if you want to avoid headaches.

Which Muffler Should You Install?

I would personally suggest the daily drivers to buy the Flowmaster Super 40 muffler. Since it is a chambered muffler it would produce deep sound while improving the overall efficiency of your car.

For daily drivers, I have an article here where I talk about why you should get the Super 40 muffler and exactly what you need to look for.

Flowmaster’s original Super 40 model was what propelled the company into the mainstream. This muffler produces a powerful, classic muscle car sound that is mainly due to its thicker case.

Developed from Flowmaster’s Top Ten race muffler lineup, the Super 40 features Delta Flow Technology for use on high-horsepower vehicles. The large, black case keeps low notes resonating while deepening the sound produced.

If you want something deep and rich, the Super 40 will provide exactly what you need as it has for years.

Muffler For Large Trucks and SUVs

The Flowmaster 50 Series muffler is ideal for towing applications. It maintains a mild tone and increased performance for better horsepower and torque, with minimal interior noise.

The resonance tuning chamber allows for unrestricted exhaust flow while muffling the tone of the muffler inside your vehicle.

Hence, it is the quietest muffler designed by Flowmaster.

Along with minimizing back pressure that led to increased horsepower and torque, Flowmaster 50 series mufflers will also improve fuel efficiency.

The muffler starts with heavy gauge steel that is impregnated by an aluminium alloy during a molten state- this makes for a durable construction.

For Race Cars

If you are looking for a muffler for a race, I would suggest you buy the Flowmaster Super 10 muffler.

You can use it on the racetrack. However, it is street illegal due to its loud noise.

The Flowmaster Super 10 is the most aggressive muffler of all of those produced by Flowmaster.

Loud and fast cars need the Flowmaster Super 10 Series Delta Flow Muffler. This muffler utilizes patented, classic Delta Flow performance technology.

Super 10 Delta Flow mufflers are constructed with a durable 409S stainless steel and come in many different inlet/outlet configurations.

These short, single chamber mufflers have less restrictive openings to produce a loud exhaust sound that is as open as possible.

It comes with a lifetime warranty. However, you should check your state laws before buying this muffler.

What about Muffler Delete

A muffler delete is a modification to your exhaust system that removes the stock muffler (not replacing it).

A lot of car enthusiasts are looking for ways to make their cars sound more aggressive, and muffler deletes can be a great way to do this.

This improves performance by reducing weight and lowering back pressure. A lot of people also enjoy it because it makes your engine sound meaner!

Here are some benefits to consider when deciding whether or not to get a muffler delete:

  1. Improved Performance
  2. Weight Savings
  3. Lower Back Pressure

A muffler delete pipe can cost between $50 and $250, with the demand ranging between as low as $100 to $200. It should be noted that the price will vary depending on the brand, mechanic, and your car.

All things aside, muffler deletes are intended for off-road stunts but are not allowed on most public roads.
